The magnificent set of two shotgun cases and one purse you see in the photo above are exceptionally rare and exquisite items. These are one-of-a-kind original masterworks created by Paco Lopez of Guarnicioneria Lopez. These were specifically made for, and now owned by, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain.
Actually, to be accurate, there are in fact two examples of this purse: the one pictured above, and a second one that Mr. Lopez kept for himself. As Paco explains it, the purse was such a special item and such an exceptionally detailed example of his life’s work that he wanted to make sure he kept one in the family. He figured he’d never be commissioned to create something quite as exquisite as that ever again.
But as fate would have it, a few years later a British collector and longtime client walked into his store and saw the purse. He just had to have it. And he made the proverbial offer Mr. Lopez couldn’t refuse.
So here we are today: two pieces in existence, one owned by Queen Sofia of Spain, the other by a British collector.
But: what if we told you that you might be able to own one too?
Hold that thought for a minute 🙂 .
First, let us tell you a little more – why do these even exist at all? It’s a remarkable story.
Nearly 20 years ago, Paco Lopez, owner of Guarnicioneria Lopez, was summoned by a prominent horse veterinarian and stable owner in the southeastern part of Spain. King Juan Carlos of Spain kept several of his personal riding horses there and was a longtime patron of the establishment.
Horse keeping is a challenging business that often faces tough economics, and fully staffed facilities with comprehensive medical attention are hard to maintain. During one of those difficult stretches, the King personally intervened to help this stable through the difficulties, encouraging other owners of similar horse breeds as his own to lodge their horses there as well. The stable became known as the premier specialist for those particular breeds, and this recognition allowed them to weather the choppy economic waters.
In gratitude, the veterinarian asked his friend, Paco Lopez, to create a set of one-of-a-kind items that he wanted to present as gifts to the King and Queen of Spain. Mr. Lopez got the call because just a couple of years earlier, he had made a pair of custom riding boots for the King, which the veterinarian had noticed the King himself wearing on many occasions while riding in his stables.
After many months of incredibly detailed work, Mr. Lopez emerged with the pair of shotgun cases for the King and the purse for the Queen you see pictured above. And the rest, as they say, is history.
But sometimes, history repeats itself.
When we visited with Paco Lopez in Seville a couple of weeks ago, he informed us he’s warming to the idea of making a couple more of these – just a couple, a one-time opportunity, never to be repeated again.
You see, he misses having that one he let get away. And while he’s at it, he figures might as well make one extra… or maybe two or three extras. But that’s it. No more after that. Just a few.
