Telmo Rodriguez is one of the brightest wine producers of his generation. He produces wines in 8 different wine areas across Spain, as far flung as Galicia, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Malaga and Jumilla. As Robert Parker says, “the fact that quality ranges from excellent to outstanding is a tribute to his talent and attention to detail.”
The Gaba do Xil is produced in the wine area of Valdeorras, one of the first regions Telmo Rodriguez visited at the beginning of the 1990s. After visiting several local towns, he came away greatly impressed especially after meeting a grower who still pruned his vines using an implement from the Middle Ages. That meeting served as the catalyst for Telmo Rodriguez to begin producing wines in the region. The vineyard from where Gaba do Xil originates is called La Falcoeira, in the town of Santa Cruz.
The Gaba do Xil is an understated mineral wine which is brisk, tense and thirst-quenching.
89 Points – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate:
The 2010 Gaba do Xil Godello (100%) offers up an inviting nose of pear, mineral, melon, and jasmine. Ripe, savory, and vibrant on the palate, this smooth-textured wine will deliver enjoyment for another 3-4 years.
